Raju goes to School

Ten-year old Raju jumped up from his rickety wooden charpoy, startled by the sound of someone being repeatedly slapped. It took him a few minutes to realise that the source of the sound was Kamala maasi, slapping wet clothes repeatedly on the flogging stone. He sat up cross-legged and looked straight at the picture of Lord Ganesha hanging on the cracked concrete wall. Muttering a short prayer, Raju slowly got off the charpoy and treaded carefully around the tiny space that he shared with the rest of the family, trying to get out without stepping on three-year old Ramu and two-year old Lajjo who were huddled together in a corner covered by raggedy sheets.
